Microsoft Launches ‘Recall’ Feature for Copilot+ PCs After Delays

After months of anticipation and delays, Microsoft has officially launched the AI-powered ‘Recall’ feature for its new line of Copilot+ PCs. The rollout marks a significant milestone in Microsoft’s push to integrate artificial intelligence into the Windows experience, while also reigniting discussions around user privacy and data protection.

What Is the Recall Feature?

The Recall tool allows users to scroll visually through a timeline of past digital activities—ranging from apps and websites to documents—using a searchable, AI-driven interface. Users can query the timeline using natural language, making it easier to revisit past work, find content, or recall specific interactions.

Privacy and Security: A Top Concern

Despite the innovation, Recall sparked privacy concerns during development, primarily because it involves capturing screenshots of a user’s activity. In response, Microsoft has introduced multiple safeguards:

  • Opt-in by default – Users must actively enable Recall; it is not turned on automatically.
  • Local data storage – All captured content remains on the user’s device and is never uploaded to the cloud or Microsoft’s servers.
  • End-to-end encryption – Recall data is encrypted and protected using hardware-based Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chips.
  • Sensitive content filtering – Passwords and other private data are filtered out to prevent unintentional capture.

These measures aim to balance functionality with a strong commitment to data security.

Deeper AI Integration in Windows

The Recall feature is part of Microsoft’s broader investment in AI-first computing. The April 2025 Windows update includes other enhancements such as:

  • A revamped Windows Search experience
  • A preview of the Click to Do assistant, which uses on-screen AI to help users summarize, rewrite, or take actions based on visible content

These features are exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft’s next-generation devices built with AI at the core.

What Are Copilot+ PCs?

Introduced in May 2024, Copilot+ PCs are a new class of Windows devices equipped with Neural Processing Units (NPUs) that run AI models locally, reducing dependency on the cloud. Designed for advanced tasks like AI-powered editing, productivity enhancements, and now Recall, these devices have quickly gained traction.

By late 2024, 15% of premium laptops sold in the U.S. were Copilot+ PCs—a figure expected to rise as Microsoft expands its AI ecosystem.

The Future of AI on Windows

With Recall and other tools, Microsoft is pushing toward a more intuitive, AI-augmented desktop experience. While privacy advocates will continue to monitor how features like Recall evolve, the opt-in design and localized data protections show that Microsoft is taking the concerns seriously.

As Copilot+ PCs become more common, the line between personal computing and intelligent assistance continues to blur—ushering in a new era where your PC not only works for you but remembers for you too.
