Amazon Cracks Down on Fake Reviews Using AI

Online reviews are the backbone of modern e-commerce, guiding billions of shopping decisions every year. But what happens when the trust is misplaced? According to industry estimates, between 4% and 30% of all online reviews are fake, potentially misleading customers into purchasing subpar or misrepresented products.

The Growing Threat of Fake Reviews

For years, e-commerce platforms—large and small—have struggled to stamp out fake reviews. These fraudulent endorsements, often orchestrated by sellers themselves, skew product ratings and undermine consumer trust. While some fake reviews are easy to spot—such as an overwhelming number of five-star ratings with vague praise—others are far more difficult to detect at scale.

Now, Amazon is turning to artificial intelligence to fight back.

AI-Powered Review Detection

Amazon has developed a machine learning tool designed to detect fake reviews before they ever reach customers. This AI system scans a wide range of behavioral patterns and data points to determine whether a review is legitimate or fabricated.

“We use machine learning to look for suspicious accounts, to track the relationships between a purchasing account that’s leaving a review and someone selling that product,” said Dharmesh Mehta, Amazon’s Head of Customer Trust.

The AI doesn’t just look at the content of the review. It analyzes variables such as:

  • Connections between the reviewer and seller
  • Patterns in sign-in behavior
  • History of past review activity
  • Anomalies in reviewing frequency or timing

By assessing these signals, Amazon’s system can flag and eliminate questionable reviews early—before they influence potential buyers.

A Long-Running Battle

Amazon has long been at the forefront of combating review fraud. In previous investigations, the company uncovered over 23,000 social media groups involving more than 46 million members, all dedicated to coordinating fake reviews across e-commerce platforms.

These groups often exchange free or discounted products in return for glowing reviews, or they use fake accounts to inflate seller ratings—tactics that Amazon’s AI system is now trained to detect.

“Through a combination of important vetting and really advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence, we can stop those fake reviews before a customer ever encounters them,” Mehta emphasized.

For the everyday shopper, this AI-driven system could be a game changer. It promises a cleaner, more reliable review section—helping users make informed choices based on real experiences rather than deceptive marketing tactics.
